The number of Caesareans have doubled in India in the last decade - from 9% in 2006 to 17% according to the National Family and Health Survey, 2015-2016. The increase in the procedure has come mostly from Private hospitals than in public facilities.

In a survey conducted by Central Government Health Scheme on Caesareans in private hospitals over 17,000 C-sections were conducted which made up 55% of the deliveries in just 31 cities in India.

In times of emergencies, Caesarean can save the life of a mother and her child. But its a risky medical procedures that could affect the health of the mother long after childbirth.

Why then, is there is an increase in C-Sections across India?
