Railways hog 35% of govt salary bill

The Indian government spent Rs 108,071 crore ($17.4 billion) on salaries for its 3 million civilian employees in 2012-13, an increase of 13% from the previous year, according to data released by the Pay Research Unit of the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Railways continues to have the largest share of pay and allowances at 35.7%. The highest increase was seen by the Ministry of Home Affairs as its pay and allowances increased from 21% in 2011-12 to 23.2% in 2012-13.
