Indian Air Force’s Non-Combat Battle

India’s air force has a fairly high casualty rate, most of it not in combat. A total of 66 defence personnel and 6 civilians have died between 2009-10 and 2012 due to plane crashes.


A total of 54 defence aircrafts have crashed in 45 months, an average of 1.2 crashes per month. There were 16 crashes in 2009-10, which increased to 17 in 2010-11 and declined to 15 in 2011-12. Six crashes took place till the end of 2012.


The total number of aircraft crashes includes mostly MIG 21s, which were inducted in the Indian Air Force in 1963 and MI Helicopters. MIG 21s were first produced in erstwhile Soviet Russia in 1959, and India took to MIG production in 1985.


Most crashes happened in the cities of Gwalior, Jodhpur and Hashimara with four crashes from each of these air force bases.



We see that MIGs (around 20 aircraft including 12 MIG21s) suffered the most crashes.  MI helicopters (produced by Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant), which have seen a total of 7 crashes, are also designed by erstwhile Soviet Russia.


Chetak and Cheetah helicopters, which have suffered 6 and 5 crashes, respectively, are indigenously manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Next in line are Sukhois and Kiran jets – both had 3 crashes each.  These aircrafts are also manufactured by Russia and HAL.


Why MIGs?


MIG aircrafts have been used by India for the last 40 years, and will be in use till 2018 when the new breed of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is commissioned. Incidentally, the planning for Tejas, which are meant to replace the MIGs, started in the 1980s, and Defence Minister AK Antony has set the new deadline of December2014.  Presently, there are around 252 MIG 21s still operational in the Indian Air Force.


MIGs are currently manufactured by HAL and the maintenance is also done by HAL. Recently, a former Air Force employee petitioned the Delhi High Court, alleging that crashes take place due to poor maintenance by HAL.


Chetak and Cheetah are also manufactured by HAL, and these indigenous helicopters are allegedly past the prime of their usage…

    It is interesting that we retired the Mig-23 a few years back, but continue to fly the older Mig-21 and even intend to do so till 2018 due to delays in acquiring new equipment. The figures presented here represent a deep rooted apathy towards the needs of the armed forces by the civilian bureaucracy and political leadership.

    The author perhaps want to tell that aircrafts or helicopters made by HAL are unsafe and are likely to continue to have crashes. In the summary, he failed to mention about Mirage and Jaguar Crashes. He also failed to mention that many of the crashes happened during training. Anyway, he also failed to mention that 4th generation LCA Tejas made by DRDO/HAL have not have any crash till date in so many years, a world record!

    Mr. Binod, you’ve also failed to mention that the LCA is 20 years+ late in the making. Now that is a world record like no other. You’ve also failed to mention that forget the engine, HAL can’t even get the LCAs air brake pads right. Funnily enough, you’ve failed to mention that the bulk of the crashes are from the locally assembled aircrafts. No prizes for guessing who assembled those.
    And finally you’ve convinently failed to mention that you’re an HAL stooge. The bottomline is that HAL is a politically fed fat-cat that at best is an assembler of sub standard parts, and at worst juggles with the lives of our aviation personnel.
